Kashmir: Valleys . Lakes . Snow

Valleys . Lakes . Snow

Where mountains meet

About Kashmir

Kashmir moves at the pace of the valley. Mornings begin on Dal Lake with a shikara and a flask of kahwa, afternoons drift towards Gulmarg's meadows or the pine trails around Pahalgam. It suits travellers who want scenery without a demanding itinerary.

Things to do

Worth building
the days around.

Take the early shikara

The floating vegetable market on Dal Lake starts before sunrise. It is the quietest, best hour on the water.

Ride the Gulmarg Gondola

Phase one reaches Kongdoori, phase two climbs to Apharwat. Book the second stage early in the day for clear views.

Walk the Pahalgam valleys

Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari are short drives apart and easy to combine into one relaxed day.

Spend an evening in the gardens

Nishat and Shalimar look their best in the last hour of light, with the lake behind the terraces.

Before you go

Kashmir
questions.

For one or two nights, yes. Most travellers pair a houseboat night on Dal Lake with hotel nights in Srinagar or Gulmarg for a mix of both.

Reliable snow usually arrives from late December through February. Ski packages are built around that window.

Srinagar to Gulmarg is roughly two hours and Pahalgam about two and a half. Days are comfortable rather than long.
